The Book of Shapes

The magic of Christie Microtiles is in the ability to stack the blocks in custom shapes and patterns to create arrays of artistic digital screens. Electronically, each Microtile is connected to the next within the arrays to transform the shapes into custom designed digital displays. The screens are then programmed to be interactive and this is where the real creativity, fun and playtime begins.

Called StripTease, the experiential welcome area for the Toronto Interior Design Show meant walking into a novel immersive experience. Projections were displayed on the tactile material in 1,300 strips of suspended felt cloth, while a pair of Christie MicroTile walls created a dazzling digital display with matching jagged skyscrapers showing colourful digital patterns.

At Canada's largest interior design show, guests unknowingly interacted with motion and gesture technology. Embedded sensors within the screens responded by dispersing the patterns on the tiles and showing the refection of the faces of the people interacting in return for their playful touchless gestures.

At the TEDx Waterloo event, inspiring stories and thought leadership were complimented by a digital bookcase to bring some home comfort and warmth to the speaker standing alone on a vast stage. Created with a unique array of Christie Microtiles, the oversized bookcase made to stage scale, transformed the motion images on the visual displays based on topics. A second line of horizontal tiles across the stage displayed the event transforming into the name and bio info of the speaker.

To compliment the bookcase on stage, a Tower of Tweets was created in the lobby. The Twitter stream dynamically displayed tweets named conversation bubbles to share the collective thoughts of the audiences and speakers.

A wide format screen of 32 Microtiles and a second unique "Big-O" screen shape was created, along with an array of 24 connected Microtiles on campus. Within the lab, technology can be explored and ideas shared in the combination of motion, gesture and touch technology. Mashed up with mobile apps and social media, along with the creativity of compelling content, and you have immersive, playful and memorable interactive experiences.
