It's a Mad Hatter tradition to donate to the Marillac Place for the holidays. We are extending the invite to contribute along with us this year. Donations can be in the form of canned goods, gently used (or even new) women's and children's clothing - up to 24 months preferred. Located in downtown Kitchener, Marillac Place is a safe place for women aged 16-25 who are pregnant, working towards regaining custody of their child/children or have a child (up to 24 months) in their care.
Marillac Place opened as shelter for abused women in 1987, then during 1992 they changed their requirements by offering housing and support for pregnant and parenting women. The name comes from Louise de Marillac, who was a follower of St. Vincent de Paul (who had served the sick and poor during the 16th century).
Though residency is limited to one year, the women who stay at Marillac Place receive 24 hour guidance and support - while also being able to continue their education in order to get the tools to become efficient and self-supporting mothers. This safe and affordable accommodation offers basic life training skills, child-care guidance along with academic opportunities - all with the hope of breaking cycles of homelessness and poverty.
Marillac Place relies heavily on the community for support in regards to financial contributions as well as item and clothing donations for the residents. Operating with a small staff, Marillac Place seeks to provide a smooth transition for their clients to be able to live independently in the community.
Due to community contributions, along with the professional support and guidance of staff (working to ensure rights of women and children are met) - Marillac Place is able to provide women leaving the home with a ‘departure bin’ (which might include new pots and pans, crock pot, dishes and silverware - all provided by a couple in the community) or in some cases items for apartments (furniture, bedding, appliances). These generous acts of kindness give the girls confidence - in themselves and in their community.
